Marvel is full of wonders, thanks to its near-century history, during which the comic franchise has created countless memorable characters that have been introduced in live-action for the past fifteen years.
Anti-Venom is one such character who made many comics prominent as well as animated shows and video games by becoming the main antagonist. So, who is Anti-Venom?
Anti-Venom is an altered version of the original Venom symbiote, which was created by Martin Li, who was curing Eddie Brock’s cancer in the comics. It is a hybrid symbiote with tremendous healing powers and is completely mindless, unlike Venom.
How Did Anti-Venom Emerge?
From the name alone, you could guess it is either a counterpart or a clone of Venom. Well, you’re close. Anti-Venom is more of a symbiote formed by the remnants of Venom.
Initially introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #569 comics in 2008, Anti-Venom is an alien parasite often referred to as Venom’s brother. Unlike Venom, though, Anti-Venom has white skin, a black face, and a spider symbol on his chest.
In the comics, Eddie Brock separates from Venom after being stranded in time. After learning that his cancer is spreading faster than ever, Martin Li, the infamous alter-ego of Mr. Negative, cures his disease.
However, while separating from Venom, traces of the alien symbiote remain in his body. During his treatment, Li accidentally fuses the remnants with Eddie’s blood, leading to a new kind of alien symbiote, which Eddie later names Anti-Venom.
After taking over Eddie Brock’s body, Anti-Venom runs amok, even when Venom tries to re-enter his body by leaving its current host, Mac Gargan. So, it is basically an antagonistic version of Venom.
Anti-Venom: Powers, Abilities, & Weaknesses
As an enhanced remnant version of Venom, Anti-Venom possesses incredible powers. This symbiote can blend into any surrounding and even mimic any kind of clothing to conceal its host.
Furthermore, it possesses superhuman strength, stamina, durability, and regenerative abilities. Other outlandish abilities include Immunity to Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense, Danger Sense, and Shape Alteration.
Its ability to cure literally any disease within its host body is unparalleled to any other symbiote, making its host almost invincible.
Nonetheless, there have been instances where Anti-Venom weakened due to circumstances. For example, Norman Osborn creates a deadly poison that halts the symbiote’s healing powers for a while.
Frequent healing also weakens Anti-Venom so much that it easily loses to other symbiotes. So, prolonged battles with an evenly matched enemy are likely to cause its doom.
Where Does Anti-Venom Appear?
Despite being introduced recently into the comics, Anti-Venom has made several appearances in TV shows and video games, although yet to make an appearance in the live-action media.
It appears in both the Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man animated series. The first one involves its host, Harry Osborn, and was created by Doctor Octopus and Michael Morbius.
Meanwhile, it appears in the episode “Vengeance of Venom” in the Spider-Man series and was created by May Parker. However, Anti-Venom’s appearances in video games were simply remarkable.
Spider-Man: Edge of Time features an epic fight between Anti-Venom and Miguel O’Hara, who was recently made canon through Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Other Anti-Venom appearances in games include Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Marvel: Avengers Alliance, Spider-Man: Unlimited, Marvel: Future Fight, and Marvel Strike Force.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding at an alarming rate, it is only a matter of time before we see Anti-Venom on the big screen because the inclusion of X-Men and Fantastic Four opens numerous possibilities.
So, what do you think about Anti-Venom? Should it be included in the upcoming Spider-Man 4 movie?
