THE DALLES, Ore. - A suspect was killed and an Oregon State Police trooper was wounded when a traffic stop led to a shooting along Interstate 84 east of The Dalles, police said.

Lt. Gregg Hastings said the shooting happened at milepost 106, which is just east of Highway 97 and 20 miles east of The Dalles.

Police first said the suspect was detained then later said he had been killed.

It's not clear what events led up to the shooting.

I-84 was closed at Biggs Junction from milepost 105 to milepost 109 for the investigation and was expected to be closed for five to six hours.

Motorists heading west on I-84 should exit at milepost 109 and use Highway 30 to the Biggs junction; eastbound drivers should exit I-84 at The Dalles bridge and use Washington's Highway 14.

More police are on their way to the scene to investigate.

No further details were immediately available.
