Pawns: Dragon's Dogma 2 Companions
Dragon's Dogma 2 is a single-player game, but this does not mean that you will be lonely during the game, your exploration companions will be Pawns.
As Arisen, you have your own four-person party and your companions will be Pawns, i.e. characters controlled by the game's AI, having their own skills and features. Pawns are your AI Companions.
AI-controlled Pawns are one of the most important elements of the gameplay system in Dragon's Dogma 2. There are two types of Pawns: Main Pawn and Support Pawn.
Pawns have their own characteristics such as Experience Level, Vocation (character class), Pawn Specializations (skills), Pawn Quest (task specific to a given Pawn) and other features.
Pawns do not have free will or emotions, their trademark is a scar on the palm of their hand, similar to the symbol of Arisen.
The Party in Dragon's Dogma 2 - Arisen and Pawns
The party in Dragon's Dogma 2 consists of four characters:
- Arisen - your main character, manually controlled by you, whom you create at the beginning of the game's plot.
- Main Pawn - the main companion created by you at the beginning of the game, who will always remain faithful by your side. Its behavior is controlled by AI, but you have full influence on its development and appearance.
- Support Pawns - companions created by other players, you can join two of them to your team at a time. Support Pawns are AI-controlled and can complement the team's capabilities with their skills. You can change these Pawns during the game depending on what support characters you need at a given moment.
Who are Pawns and how do you recruit them?
Pawns in Dragon's Dogma 2 are mysterious otherworldly beings whose sole purpose of existence is to accompany and help Arisen on his travels. You create your Main Pawn, your main companion, yourself. There are many potential Support Pawns in the game world that you can summon using Rift Stones, magical portals scattered throughout the game world, or meet during your exploration of the land.
As the game's plot progresses, Pawns will become more and more powerful and acquire new powers over time as they will develop just like your main character. Summoning Pawns at an experience level higher than your character's current experience level requires a fee in Rift Crystals, a special currency found throughout the game.
Pawns, as multidimensional beings, may have knowledge they acquired in other timelines. This means that it may turn out that a given Pawn has already experienced the events that you encounter at a given moment in the plot or during a Side Quest, because another player completed this specific task in the company of this Pawn during their gameplay. This opens up very interesting possibilities because better-developed Pawns may prove to be much more helpful in your gameplay.
During the game, you can give your Pawns simple orders, but generally their behavior is guided by the game's AI and predefined behavior styles.
Pawns fulfill a role similar to another Player Characters, experiencing the game with you as if they were real players with whom you play cooperatively. This is intended to give the player the impression that he or she is playing with other players whom he or she does not have to wait for and who are always available to play together.
Additional Support Pawns in your party
In addition to your character Arisen and the Main Pawn you created at the beginning of the game, you can also add two additional Support Pawns to your team during the game, selected from the large population of available Pawns.
Support Pawns are Pawns created by other Dragon's Dogma 2 players. You can summon them through magical Rift Stones portals and use them in your gameplay.
Support Pawns have their own "history and memory", so it may happen that they have "supernatural" knowledge about the events you encounter, which can be very useful.
In practice, it looks like you borrow Support Pawns from other players to use them on your team for some time.
