Mackenzie Phillips controversy
Phillips disclosed in her 2009 memoir, “High on Arrival”, that she was 11 years old when she began using cocaine and her father was complicit, taking it alongside her and even administering it through injections. At the age of 20 in 1980, she was dismissed from the series, “One Day at a Time” due to her struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. Although she returned to the series post completing a rehab programme, a relapse into cocaine use resulted in her permanent dismissal in 1983. The pattern of cocaine use persisted until the first half of the 1990s, but she has remained drug-free since.
Phillips also disclosed that she was sexually assaulted by her father in 1979, on the eve of her first marriage. Furthermore, she entered into a sexual relationship with her father for a period and she described it as a form of ‘sort of Stockholm syndrome’. The inappropriate relationship ceased after Phillips became pregnant, and her father financed her abortion.
Phillips shared her journey towards forgiving her father, John Phillips, the singer from The Mamas & the Papas. In a YouTube conversation with her half-sister, Chynna Phillips Baldwin, the 64-year-old reflected on the theme of forgiveness.
Discussing her father, she remarked: “Dad was something else.”
Despite facing criticism and trolling online for her forgiving stance, she emphasised that forgiveness is a personal process, not an endorsement of the actions being forgiven. Although complicated, she said she is at peace.
