Court: Milk substitute to blame for calves deaths

BOISE, Idaho (AP) The Idaho Supreme Court has upheld a verdict that blamed an agricultural company's milk substitute for the deaths of more than 100 Magic Valley dairy calves seven years ago.

But the Times-News reports the justices denied a request by J&J Ranch to be awarded attorney fees won at trial.

The case stems from a lawsuit filed by Jesus Hurtado and John Reitsma after 130 of their calves died over a four-month period in 2005.

The ranchers claimed a milk replacement product made by Land O'Lakes was the cause, and a district court jury agreed and awarded $150,000 in legal fees.

The company successfully challenged the verdict and legal fees, only to lose a second time.

The justices on Tuesday upheld the second verdict, finding the milk product at fault.
