Clay is the guy, Aaron Boone positive on Clay Holmes turnaround despite 10 blown saves in Y

July 2024 · 4 minute read

New York Yankees pitcher Clay Holmes’ declining performance remains a concern for the team as they lose 3-2 against the Detroit Tigers in the Little League Classic faceoff. Fans are concerned over his ability to close games in crucial moments as this match recorded his 10th blown save of the season.

During the game, he gave up a walk and a double as the Tigers took the lead in the game. While the team has regained some of its winning scores, they have yet to maintain a consistent win record to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Throughout the 2024 regular season, the NY Yankees are in for a ride, starting from their dominating season to crumbling July, and reviving back since Jazz Chisholm Jr. trade. Although fan concerns over Holmes’ performance remain at its peak point, manager Aaron Boone is confident in the pitcher.

Clay has had some tough breaks back there that’s led to (10 blown saves)…The reality is he’s throwing the ball really well. That said, we’ve got a lot of guys that are throwing the ball well in certain situations. Right now, Clay is the guy.
Aaron Boone on X.

Boone confidently noted during Sunday’s press conference that he’ll go with Clay Holmes as the closer for the rest of the year, adding “we’ll see as we go.” Holmes’ inconsistency in team performance has made the fans question the pitcher, especially since the Yankees are looking forward to playoff games.

Fans react as Clay Holmes blows 10th save of the season

Unlike Aaron Boone who believes in Clay Holmes’ turnaround, fans are not satisfied with the pitcher’s performance. Their frustration over his inconsistency was once again brought up after Sunday’s game where the team lost the series to the Tigers.

Insisting on keeping Holmes at the plate has even made some questions about the depth of the  New York Yankees lineup. Holmes made a strong start for the season, but eventually faltered in several crucial game closing moments for the Yankees.

He sucks!

Why haven’t the Yankees DFA’d him?

— thomas (@knixoptimist) August 19, 2024

@AaronBoone will keep trotting Holmes and now Leiter Jr out there and make excuses or like he’s doing here, downplay the poor play. Regardless he’s costing the @Yankees losses by continuing to pretend Holmes is a closer.
Hal and Cashman did this team no favors with the crap…

Blew his league leading 10th save… but thought he was sharp.

Boone shut the fuck up. What if that one pitch cost you a World Series 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ what excuse or sugar coating BS you gonna come up with then?? Do us all a favor and just Stop. He’s fucking garbage

Time for a different closer….

— John Akroyd (@jakroyd1) August 19, 2024

He’s very consistent. I think he should try and break the record. If you’re gonna be bad, do it with flair!

The team is also missing Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the lineup after he injured his left elbow and went into IL for 10 days. On the other hand, both Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are enjoying their prime season with incredible records and performances. It remains to be seen whether Holmes can bring the firepower back into the mix or get his name cut out from the lineup.
